Terrell County ~ Gateway to West Texas

Scenic West Texas near Big Bend National Park is considered the last of the Great Frontier. These ranches are located in the Northeast corner of Big Bend Country at the edge of the Chihuanuan Desert, near U.S. Highway 90. This rugged country abounds with wildlife and scenic wilderness, offering prime hunting and recreational activities.

The nearby town of Sanderson is the seat of Terrell County, and boasts of low crime, exemplary rated public schools, free Internet access and low cost of living. Strong community values and economic opportunities provide the best quality of life, making the area an excellent place to live and work. Sanderson actively promotes population and business growth in harmony with our heritage, cultural diversity and natural environment.

Located midway between El Paso and San Antonio on U.S. Highway 90, Sanderson is sixty miles east of Big Bend National Park and eighteen miles north of Mexico. In 1999, the state Senate declared Sanderson and Terrell County the "Cactus Capital of Texas".

Founded in 1881, Sanderson was established when railroad surveyors built a maintenance facility. Until it closed in 1995, the railroad was one of the largest employers in town, along with cattle and sheep ranches and related industries. Today, the largest employer is government - U.S. Border Patrol, Texas Department of Transportation, county government, and the school district.

For those seeking Ecommerce and telecommuting opportunities; low cost land, housing and commercial buildings; jobs or businesses related to nature and heritage tourism; or construction trades, Sanderson offers much opportunity.

  • A leader in rural technology, the Terrell County TeleCommunity (TCTC) maintains CactusNet, a local community network offering free public access to internet. Sanderson is served by local dial-up, satelite, DSL and wireless internet.
  • Local public schools have been rated "exemplary" for eight years running by the Texas Education Agency. The November 2002 Issue of Texas Monthly Magazine listed Terrell County ISD as one of the top 5 schools in Texas in its size class. With a student to teacher ratio of 7 to 1, TCISD offers desirable teaching conditions, air conditioned and carpeted facilities, with modern libraries and computer labs. An excellent coaching staff with six state championships between them has led the Sanderson Eagles to a winning season and recognition as one of the top teams in the State in 6-man football.
  • Property and sales taxes are the lowest in the Big Bend area. County and school tax assessments are less than 2% per $100 in evaluation before homeowner and senior exemptions.
  • The largest employers are the schools, Terrell County, oil and gas service industries, and the U.S. Border Patrol. The Border Patrol has announced a new $4.3 million station in Sanderson which ultimately will staff about 50 agents. Some 18 agents are on staff now and the hiring of another 8 has been authorized.
  • Sanderson is home to seven churches, and numerous civic and social organizations. Five colleges and state universities are within 200 miles. The Terrell County Airport has a 4500-foot paved lighted runway with fuel and a fixed base operator. Midland International Airport is about 160 miles.
